Deliver
me, I pray Thee, from the hand of my brother, from the hand of Esau;
for I fear him, lest he come and smite me, the mother with the
children.”-Genesis
32:10 (Machon

“The
seal of G-d is truth”- Talmud:
Tractate Sanhedrin 64a
“Those
who cannot debate, defame.”
- Rabbi Meir Kahane (of blessed memory)
I
recently authored an article entitled, “Esau
Rising: The War Against The Jewish Soul”,
for The Jewish Press, where I detailed the growing threat of the
Hayovel missionary organization in the Shomron. As
I had hoped,
I provoked a reaction from two of the pivotal players who have been
aiding and working with this organization and its leader, Tommy
Waller; namely, David Haivri of the Shomron Liason Office and Yisrael
Medad, who responded to my article in the form of a blog post on
Arutz Sheva, Fuchs
Descending.
A not terribly clever title which riffs on my own title, Esau
Rising”.... You get the point. (I had to resist the urge to counter
with “Medad's Madness.”) Personally, I am pleased that I evoked
such a reaction. It means I got under his skin.
Yisrael
Medad's Arutz Sheva profile notes that he has “served
in a volunteer capacity as a Yesha Council spokesperson, twice a
member of Amana's secretariat, Benjamin Regional Council plenum
member and mayor of Shiloh.” Needless to say, he was not happy with
my article and he accused me of “falsehood and misrepresentation.”
Not only are Medad and his ilk involved in terrible halachic
prohibitions, he has the gall to respond with such brazen falshood,
despite the tremendous documentation which exposes (for those who
want to do the research) that the Waller's are evangelical
missionaries.
This article
will respond
to Yisrael Medad on a point-by -point basis, his comments being
italicized. As I hope to show the reader, there is no doubt that
Hayovel is a missionary organization, and that they would not be
where they are today, were it not for individuals like David Haivri
and Yisrael Medad.
Before
I start, I would like to recommend the following websites as
excellent sources for information on missionary activity in Israel,
including the Waller family and Hayovel. I would be remiss if i did
otherwise, since they are the most prominent players exposing this
horrific phenomenon. Their work is a tremndous sanctification of The
Almighty's name in the face of an unprecedented desecration. I leave
it to the intellectual honesty of the reader to do the research,
weigh the evidence, and decide for themselves:
As
I see it, any intellectually honest Jew or righteous gentile will be
blown away with what is going on in the Shomron. Ignore the carefully
crafted statements of the Medads and Haivris of the Jewish community,
who try to portray parve images of the Wallers. If you check out
these sites and process the damning information, you will see what is
going on. To do otherwise would be akin to saying that ISIS is not
crucifying and beheading people, despite the plethora of video
footage of atrocities.
Point
#1: Medad
starts by citing a paragraph from my article and then responding:
Donny
Fuchs: Our
many spiritual foes desire our souls. They wish to convert us. Many
religious Jews recognize the danger of the former, but not the
latter. They have forgotten centuries of mass slaughter from those
who merely wanted us to fall on our knees and kiss the cross.”
- Medad responds: Who is the “they”? Is it possible that there are non-Jews who seek to assist the Jewish People, and more specifically the rights of Jews in the Land of Israel? Is Fuchs not capable of distinguishing between those Christians who wish to convert and those who do not engage in missionary activity? Or does he negate all Christians?
My
response: Naturally,
the “THEY” are evangelical missionaries. And yes, THEY are the
enemy. The very definition of an evangelical means they want to bring
Jews to the cross. The willingness to wear any mask, to change
tactics to accomadate the challenge is right out of the gospels
(Corinthians). Are there righteous
gentiles who wish to help Israel without converting them? Perhaps
yes. But the Wallers do not fall in this theoretical
category,
although Medad would like to delude the reader into believing that
they do. All this, despite the plethora of information, written and
visual which documents that the Wallers are missionaries. I ask the
reader to check out this video link, where Tommy Waller talks about
showing Jews this “Jesus
that we know.”
http://jewishisrael.ning.com/video/waller-family-and-hayovel
For those who lack
the patience to check the link, here is what Tommy Waller said. I
don't know how anyone with functional ears and eyes can misunderstand
his message.
“As
we're working with these people [the Jews], we'll be able to share
with them this Jesus, that we know… “
One
of Waller's sons continues:
“Our
family has begun a ministry called Hayovel. The vision of Hayovel is
to develop a network of individuals, families and congregations who
are ready to labor side by side with the people of Israel. To bless
them, to stand with them, to share with them a passion for the soon
coming jubilee in yeshua messiah."
Thank
you Tommy, for your honesty. And this is merely one of many clips
that expose the Wallers.
Halachah:
Gentiles in the Land
But
all this this begs a question which cannot be overlooked. One who
subscribes
to Halacha
must adhere to the full parameters of Jewish law. And so we cannot
ignore the real question of the permissibility of any gentile helping
out in the land, even those genuinely friendly
to the Jewish people without any agendas whatsoever. Here we enter
the very complicated discussion regarding which gentiles are allowed
to be in the land, either permanently or even temporarily. This is a
purely halachic issue, and while I am not a posek (halachic decisor),
I will cite some of the most prominent positions.
Rambam:
Despite
Medad's spurious assault
on my commitment
to the Rambam, I would suggest that he point out where I
misunderstand the Rambam rather than hurl insults. The insults don't
hurt me, but Medad doesn't address
the points I raise. The Rambam would generally be viewed as one of
the stricter (perhaps strictest)
Rishonim when it comes to the halachic
criteria
for gentiles residing in the land. Assuming that the situation is one
where Jews are stronger than the gentiles, only those gentiles who
follow the 7 laws of Noah, accept “tribute and servitude” and
accept
the status of ger toshav (resident stranger) in front of a Jewish
court during a time of yovel (jubilee),
can attain this status.

This
is the Rambam. Yisrael Medad may not like it, but that's his problem
not mine. Certain positions
take a lenient reading of the Rambam in a time without Yovel and the
Jewish court. But that is beyond the scope of this article.
The
Raavad takes a more lenient position. In a nutshell, he essentially
agrees with the Rambam that we don't accept resident strangers in our
age, but parts ways from Rambam regarding foreigners residing in the
land who are not idolators. Even in the absence of accepting the Laws
of Noah in the presence of a court of Israel, the Raavad would permit
their presence.
This
is a very complicated Halachic topic that has many nuances, and this
is not a full treatment of the subject. It is merely to inform the
reader that there is a range of discussion which precedes the issue
of using the services of evangelicals in the land. And I have not
even broached the Halachic subject of what constitues idolatry. Medad
would surely deem Rambam a fanatic.
Point
#2: Medad
continues: As
for his information, which is not at all first-hand, if he has
depended mainly on what he describes as the “excellent website
Jewish Israel…another goldmine of meticulously researched,
documented information…”, that is most unfortunate. They have a
record of guilt-by-association, misunderstanding basics, getting
details wrong, and, in a personal note, besmirching Jews in
conducting sucrrilous [sic] attacks ("It seems that Yisrael
Medad found Jesus in Shiloh.").
My
response: I
ask the reader to check the websites referenced above, which I
reiterate,
are tremendous repositories of well
documented
information. Let the intellectually honest reader check these
websites and decide for themselves if they have done their homework.
Esav Exposed has documented and detailed the complex web of
relationships the Wallers have with missionaries, apostate Jews, and
various religious Jews who work with them. And far from the zealots
that he would portray them as, Jewish Israel keeps the discussion
very cerebral. As referenced above, Medad was the topic of one of
their posts and he seems to not have gotten over it. The invectives
he hurls at them will not be found in any of their counter-responses.
Point
#3: Medad:
His
language is hateful: ‘These soul snatchers are planting a parasitic
vine that will ultimately strangle those within the religious camp.
This foe…is as patient as an adder.” And he uses the cover of
metaphor as in “Jews who go to minyan thrice daily and learn Torah
have allowed the cross to be put up in their homes, metaphorically
speaking of course.’ This is quite an unfortunate display of
childish semantics.
My
response:
So
you don't like my prose? That is how I respond to genuine
“soul snatchers planting a parasitic vine.” Medad may not be
convinced. But I am. And the same way I could care less about
referring to a nazi or Hamasnik in ugly terms, a spiritual virus
deserves nothing but vitriol. As King David said, “O
L-rd, You know I hate those who hate You, and loath Your enemies”
(Psalms 139:21).
Point
# 4: In
claiming we are "easy prey", if so, how successful has
Hayovel
been? How many Jews converted over the last decade? He paints the
possibility
of mixed marriages and asks, "Unlikely scenario? I think not. I
think that it is more unlikely that this won’t happen, if things
persist as they are. Frankly I wouldn’t be surprised if such
“meetings” are already occurring." Well, is he in for a
surprise.
My
response: It
depends on how we judge
success.
If Tommy Waller has chosen to take the covert clever path as he has,
then his efforts to this point have been a success, since
he has accomplished
what no other missionaries have been able to do until now. Plant a
base in the heart of a religious community. Clearly
the danger with Hayovel is not that they run over to a Jew and ask
them to embrace Jesus. The danger is more insidious and
calculating. They are planting roots in Israel, and usurping our
Divine claim to the land as a “co-covenant,” if you will, which
hides their true belief that the covenant is ultimately theirs. They
are succeeding in blurring the distinction between gentile and jew,
and the very basic
tenets of the faith. Hayovel forges open alliances in Israel and
abroad with overt missionaries
and Jewish apostates. This is the danger. Never in history
have we seen such a thing happening under the noses of religious
Jews.
For
those who don't know, many of the women from Hayovel wear the
religious head-covering mitpachot, of the daati-leumi world. Why? The
men often cover their heads. These are subtle ways to blur the
external, while working on the more difficult task of exposing Jewish
beliefs to christian perspectives.
The
informative site, Esav Exposed, provides a thourough analysis into
the ideology of “restoration.” Check the following link,
since I cannot do justice to her entire article:
In
“ What Do Xian Zionists Mean When They Talk About Restoration”,
Geulah Girl notes: Z
When
asked by missionary Dean Bye about his motivation, Tommy Waller says
"what we desire to do is to see Israel fully restored in every
aspect of scripture".
She
elaborates upon the term “restoration”:
While
this sounds harmless, most Jews do not know or understand that there
is a whole theology behind this word. According to this theology
there are two parts to the restoration, a physical part and a
spiritual part.
ONIS1.The
physical restoration is the uniting of Jew and Gentile into "one
new man" or one "House of Israel" in the land of
Israel. They believe that yeshu came to break down the wall of
separation between Jew and gentile and that they must continue this
work in preparation for his return. They have taken on Hebrew names,
customs, dress, speech, and claim to be coming to "learn from
Jews". All of this is to get closer to Jews in order to unite as
one people.
Activities
that promote this goal are "building bridges",cultivating
relationships with Jews, volunteering or "serving",
donating money to Israeli groups and working towards xian/ephraimite
aliyah.
- The spiritual restoration is when when the Jewish people are "restored" to their messiah yeshu, who is also G-d and the son of G-d, according to these xians. Then a "restored" Israel, Jew and gentile worshipers [sic] of yeshu, will be prepared for redemption, which they believe is yeshu's return and reign from Jerusalem.
-if
they are ever allowed to make aliyah or even to live in the yishuvim
on a permanent basis, then they will devote all efforts toward this
goal.TS
David
Haivri, Hayovel, And Messianic Jews.
Let's
not forget David Haivri of the Shomron Liason Office. In response to
my article, Haivri posted the following:
Donny
Fuchs- Sorry that you published this unwarranted attack on the Waller
family and their HaYovel volunteer program. I have monitored their
activity very closely over the past six years and can responsibly
vouch for them as they are sincere friends of Israel and are not part
of a missionary agenda. (BTW, you are also mislead regrading [sic]
their own theological position on their own believes and faith). They
deserve our respect and appreciation. You should look into this
further and apologize to them for this post.
He
hasn't monitored their activity. He has been partners with them. Nor
would he be qualified to “monitor “ them, whatever that means.
(Stop saying Jesus so much?) He then proceeded to apologize to an
evangelical who was upset at my article, and noted that he was
ashamed as an Israeli. Fortunately, Esav Exposed has already put the
microscope on Haivri. In her article (which includes several
screenshots), “Hayovel
and the Israel Advocacy Conference in New York”,
Geula Girl reports:
Aaron
Murphy spoke at Ha'Ivri's Israel
Advocacy Conference,
as the representative of Hayovel. Here are a few things you should
know about Murphy.
Before
he removed his online footprint, as all people who are publicly
associated with Hayovel do, Aaron Murphy had a facebook page in which
he referred to himself as a "bond-servant of Yahshua the Messiah
(Jesus Christ)" and in another place he listed his religion as
"Hebrew Israelite".
Perhaps
Haivri and Medad need to get rid of their online footprints?
Point
# 5: Medad:
He
quites from a "trusted inside source". That, I admittedly,
am guessing is some former Kach people who were wrong in the past.
My
response: I
don't
know precisely
what Medad means. He certainly has no idea where I received my info.
I can't really comment except to say that it is a trusted expert
source. As far as Kach, I don't know what Medad's problem is. Again
we have his fantastical assumptions that the expert or experts are
“some former Kach people.” Evidently Medad had a problem with
Rabbi Meir Kahane. It makes sense, since he would have been repulsed
by these events, and were he alive today, would be raising his
righteous voice. So I'm in good company.
Point
#6: Medad:
He
describes the leader of Hayovel
as the "infamous Tommy Waller (of the notorious missionizing
Waller family)". Really now.
My
response:
Huh? This is a response? Defend the Wallers. Explain to me why the
videos of them talking about Yeshua (missionary for Jesus) don't
expose their beliefs. Explain to me why the Wallers and their friends
are featured in video after video with known “messianic Jews.”
But it gets better.
Ironically,
these same people would show you scores of videos of Arafat and Abbas
(yemach sh'mam v'zichram) expressing their true intentions, and
wonder why the anti-semitic world doesn't take them at their word.
Correctly so, but the same applies to matters of the soul.
Point
# 7: Medad:
He
advocates violence, that we “smash their altars…”. That is not
too smart.
My
response:
I never advocated violence. I'm sorry for quoting from the Tanach. I
didn't know it would offend you. What can I say? I'm a “pharisee.”
Still committed to that stubborn halachic
system. In case the reader is confused, I cited the following
biblical passages. Evidently, this caused Medad to see red:
Deuteronomy
12:3:
"And
you shall destroy their name from this place."
Judges
2:1-2: "'The
angel of the L-rd came up from Gilgal to Bochim and said, "I
made you go up out of Egypt, and have brought you unto the Land which
I swore unto to your fathers, and I said....'You shall make no
covenant with the inhabitants of the land. You shall smash their
altars..."
Point
# 8: Medad:
He
totally misrepresents Rav Soloveitchik's 'psak Halacha'
that Jews should
not be "engaged in one form or another of “interfaith-dialogue".
It specifically referred to the Vatican II period and, in any case,
there is no inter-faith dialoguing.
My
response: Judging
from his
response,
it is evident that
either Medad never read Rav Soloveitchik's
seminal essay “Confrontation” or he failed to understand it.
Anyone who has read the Rav's numerous writings on this issue know
that
he was rigidly opposed to any such dialogue before or after Vatican
II. What transpired in Vatican II has no relevance on the core points
of the Rav's essay. Please refer to Dr. David Berger's essay,
Revisiting
“Confrontation” After Forty Years: A Response to Rabbi Eugene
Korn,
for a comprehensive analysis of this issue, which is actually not a
rigid treatment of the subject. Although, I doubt that Medad will
read this essay, considering that he never understood the original.
As far as whether Medad and others are actually engaging in dialogue,
they have gone even further. They have opened
the door for a blurring of the two faith communities.
My
referencing the Rav's classic
article serves merely as a fundamental
ideological
approach that cannot be ignored when discussing this issue. At the
core of the article is the necessity of respectively maintaining a
distance between the two faith communities, not trying to merge them.
And this was written in the context of the American Jewish
experience, where Jew and gentile shared commmunal concerns. In
Eretz Yisroel, we have biblical prohibitions which make many of the
points of the article less relevant or perhaps irrelevant, since the
halachah clearly defines which gentiles may even enter the land.
Point
# 9 Medad:
He insists "there is no definitive evidence that a specific
historical Jesus existed… based upon two different figures in the
Gemara" but as we know from the booklet חסרונות
הש"ס
and
from any good historical research as "Jesus in the Talmud"
by Peter Schäfer; Scattered
throughout the Talmud can be found quite a few references to Jesus.
The Talmudic stories make fun of Jesus' birth from a virgin,
fervently contest his claim to be the Messiah and Son of God, and
maintain that he was rightfully executed as a blasphemer and
idolater. They subvert the Christian idea of Jesus' resurrection and
insist he got the punishment he deserved in hell--and that a similar
fate awaits his followers. Schäfer contends that these stories
betray a remarkable familiarity with the Gospels--especially Matthew
and John.
My
response: I
don't
really
understand his point. Despite Schafer's assertions,
this is a historical debate that is also addressed by Jewish
authorities. Believing
in an historical Jesus is not a fundamental tenet of Judaism. Medad
almost seems offended.
In
26
Reasons Jews Don't believe in Jesus,
Asher Norman notes the following:
“The
works of 41 historians who lived during the first
century
and early second century and wrote about Judea and Rome have
survived. Significantly, none of them mentioned Jesus, his alleged
disciples, his apostles,or any of the so-called “miraculous”
events described in the gospels. It is difficult to understand how
this is possible,
if the gospel stories about Jesus described historical events.”
(page 182)
In
addressing
the alleged two “Josephus”
sources in the xtian edited “Antiquities of the Jews,” Norman
explains that scholars widely
believe that these alleged references were put in later by
christians. His reasons are as follows:
- the passage doesn't fit into the context of the surrounding text
- the perspective appears to be from a Christian viewpoint, despite the fact that Josephus is the writer. Norman notes that “it speaks naively and devotionally of Jesus, and declares him to have been the christ.” This seems a fair charge, since whatever Josephus may have been (traitor, opportunist, Romanized), he would surely not have touted Jesus as the messiah.
- the church father Origen, despite having referenced “Antiquities of the Jews,” did not cite these two sources. (183-4).
Talmud:
Despite
common perception, the talmud never references “Jesus of Nazareth.”
The Tosefta
and Baraita reference two different men that people
mistakenly associate with Jesus.
Yeishu
Ben Pandira-Problem:
- He was never crucified, but was stoned to death for sorcery and then hung from a tree.
- This occurred one hundred years before Jesus during Alexander Jannaeus's reign in Jerusalem.
Yeshu
Ben Stada-Problem:
- Lived one hundred years after Jesus.
- While his manner of death and subsequent hanging for sorcery on the eve of Passover are the same, he was killed in the town of Lydda.
Critical
Points:
- Two different personalities.
- Neither of these men were killed by Romans.
- Different towns of execution.
- Neither were crucified.
- Their dates don't correspond to the dates of Jesus that christians accept.
Did
Jesus exist according
to Rabbinical sources? Here we have a machloket
(halachic
disagreement.)
Rabbi Jehiel
ben Joseph said that the Yeshu
referenced
in rabbinic
literature was a disciple of Joshua
Ben Perachai, and NOT Jesus the Nazarene. Nachmanides
rejected
the notion that the Talmud
references Jesus. Maimonides maintained that it did. (Norman,
186-187). Ultimately, the historicity of Jesus is irrelevant for the
believing Jew.
- Point # 10- Medad references my statement: “Righteous gentiles who want to assist the nation of Israel may have opportunities to do so, but it must always be in accordance with Jewish law. This is where proper poskim need to come into the equation, since it is purely an halachic matter. But those who are evangelical cannot have any foothold in the country!”
Medad's
Response: Medad
rejects the notion that Hayovel volunteers are mingling and spending
considerable time in the vineyards. The problem is that videos of
Hayovel feature multiple scenarios of interactions between
“The Harvesters” and Jews. There
are videos of people dancing, talking in the fields, singing,
interacting in the home, etc. The pure segregation between the groups
is a myth. By his own acknowledgement, Medad has spoken before
hundreds of the volunteers.
Here
are several examples of Jews mingling and interacting with Hayovel:
- Hayovel volunteers dancing with Jews in the vineyards of Ofra. (Notice that Waller and a kipah wearing Avi Lipkind are featured on an overt “messianic site” that targets Jews. That Lipkind would ever talk to these people is outrageous. Pray tell me, why would Waller ever appear on such an overt missionary porgram? This is the last program a righteous, non-missionizing gentile would ever appear on!)
If
you are going to call me a liar, Yisrael, at least have the sense to
destroy any or all video documentation on the web which proves that I
am correct. Baruch Hashem for our age of social media! The Almighty
truly sends the antidote before the plague.
Point
#11: Medad
concludes
by citing my statement: “A spiritual contagion is growing in the
Shomron. They are aided by religious Jews who, for economic and
political reasons, have eagerly taken Brother Esau’s hand.”
Medad's
response: If
there is any 'contagion,' it is the type of argumentation and lack of
facts displayed. Luckily, there is an antidote: the truth. Those who
seek to proselytize need be combated. Those who seek to aid are to be
welcomed, with all due supervision.
My
concluding remarks: True
to form, Medad doesn't like facts. His emotional response is not to
respond with intellectual points of his own to counter the evidence,
but rather to shout the “facts” down as falsehoods without
responding. This is not the manner of one who is capable of having a
rational discussion. I stand by my statement. There is a contagion in
Israel and it is being aided by religious Jews.
Unfortunately,
Hayovel has managed to dupe
the esteemed Rav Eliezer Melamed, shlita, of Har Brachah. Try as he
might, Medad will not goad me into attacking Rav Melamed. As little
as I can understand it given the weight of evidence, I will be dan
lkaf z'chut
that such a gadol would never give approval to such a venture if he
truly knew what was going on. Those of us committed to ending this
insanity will certainly welcome the opportunity to speak with Rav
Melamed.
So with respect, and despite the imperative to combat a chillul
Hashem, I will give him the benefit of the doubt. But that is where
it ends. Since Rav Melamed is currently unaware of the danger, we
must speak out in his stead and expose Hayovel. Furthermore, the
self-appointed Jewish leaders who have brought this mess upon us are
not so innocent. They have exposed Am Yisroel to a tremendous
spiritual danger. And so they too must be exposed.
Consider
the following hypothetical scenario: Evangelicals in America approach
the principals of Jewish yeshivot and summer camps to profess their
love for the Jewish people. They merely want to volunteer by taking
care of school property
or camp grounds
and thus
assist the Jewish people. I can assure you with absolute certainlty
there is not one mainstream yeshiva in America that would accept
such an offer. No one would subject their children to even such a
limited interaction. The irony is that only in Israel, where a
respect for divine
miracles has eroded into a peculiar bizarre form of forbidden
messianism, can such a thing occur. Generally, for the most part, the
Jewish communities in Israel and abroad are unaware of what is
happening. Fortunately, efforts are underway to finally expose the
Wallers and those who aid them. That day is coming. And the Yisrael
Medads of the world will have to answer for their sins.
Those
in Israel who are interested in learning more, should join the
upcoming conference in Ariel, which will feature various speakers and
a comprehensive presentation. Another opportunity for the reader to
open his mind and weigh the evidence. Ask questions. Have

Incidentally,
Waller and his minions are pressuring the hotel where the conference
is scheduled, to cancel the event. Now why would they do that? Sounds
like someone is scared.
Yisrael
Medad, you can hurl your vitriol at me, and sugar coat this nightmare
any way you like. I and many others will continue to fight this
insidious infection that threatens the Jewish people. You and yours
will have to answer to The Almighty for this despicable betrayal. In
the meantime, we will continue to fight for the integrity of the
Jewish soul, as readily as we would for a physical attack on the
Jewish people.
It
is tragic that the fight for truth and the battle to maintain
Yahadut's spiritual isloation exposes us to attack from religious
Jews, who respond like bloodthirsty lions. Fortunately, I derive
strength from the attribute of my biblical namesake (Donny really
being Daniel). I am comfortable in the lion's den.
Yisrael
Medad speaks of truth. But whose truth? Tommy Waller's? The messianic
congregations alligned with him in Israel and abroad? The Talmud
teaches us that “the
seal of G-d is truth”
(Sanhedrin 64a). And so it is. And all Torah committed Jews should
fight for it, regardless of the consequences, or the pathological
wrath of those who cannot tolerate that we are finally pulling up the
shades and letting the sunlight shine on the darkness. And we are
just getting started.
May
The Almighty bless all Jews and righteous gentiles who pursue the
truth of His Name.
